The Grey Style Project - Grey Country Style

Monday, 21 April 2014

Here's a contribution from a reader. This image was taken by Laurence's seven year-old daughter. His jacket was a present from his wife from Harvie & Hudson and he was concerned he looked too 'country squire'. Whether or not that was the case, I think his daughter has great potential as a photographer and I like the country style (and no, I didn't ask if that is Laurence's house in the background).

If you'd like to join the project (as photographer or subject) to document style in older men, please get in touch or click here.

With thanks to Laurence and his daughter

In Camera - The Grey Style Project - a new project to document the stylish older man

Monday, 3 March 2014

It's been a while since I posted any street style images, so this is the chance to announce a project to document many of the stylish older men around the country.

© Carole Evans/Grey Fox 2014

This project will record the wide range of styles, tastes and creativity among older men. Inspired by the need to find a style of their own, and fired by the confidence and wisdom of age, many are discovering that middle age and beyond is the best time to express themselves through what they wear..

EDIT - see the Grey Style Project now on Tumblr

This project is in collaboration with my sister, Carole Evans, a professional photographer about whom I've written before when I featured her Retro Girls project here. See also her website here. Carole and I will be showing these images regularly on our blogs. If you'd like to take part in the project, as a photographer or as a stylish man of over 40, please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.

In Camera: Leica - the beauty of ageing

Saturday, 23 March 2013

I love old Leica cameras. They represent quality, robustness and superb engineering. This old M3 (I think), which I photographed at Somerset House last month, doesn't have any need of batteries and will last a lifetime (as long as film is still available). It has obviously aged beautifully with its owner, as this model was last made in 1966. Its lens, like all Leica optics, will still produce crystal sharp images with bright colour.

People, like vintage cameras, cars, watches, jewellery or furniture will age beautifully as long as no attempt is made to make them look younger than they really are. For more see my Pinterest board here.

In Camera - London Fashion Week: The lady wearing three watches

Wednesday, 6 March 2013

I had a fascinating time wandering around Somerset House during London Fashion Week last month. I was probably the only person there with no interest in women's wear. What captivated me was the circus going on around the shows. Legions of bloggers all chasing the same shots, willowy models wafting around covered with goosebumps and stunning combinations of colours I'd never seen before. All this powered by the creative force which has caused London to eclipse even Milan as a fashion centre this year.

I most enjoyed meeting and chatting - with photographers, bloggers, fashion workers, artists and fellow Twitterati. Having spent most of my life in the legal profession I was plunged into a world as foreign to me as a village market in deepest Bhutan.

This lovely lady has had a long and distinguished career in the fashion industry and now runs objects2desire.com. She showed me her beautiful cashmere coat, soft as butter. We had a long chat and, as we were about to part, she suddenly pulled back her cuff as she wanted to show me that she wears three watches.

The style, characters and dress sense of the older women I met at Somerset House quite eclipsed the gaudy, often shallow, carnival around them.

In Camera - Timeless fashion from retired cavalry officer at London Fashion Week

Saturday, 23 February 2013

This gentleman kindly agreed to allow me to photograph him as I prowled round Somerset House. He served in the Cavalry and told me that he bought his coat when he joined the Army. Apart from losing a button, it had obviously survived as robustly as its wearer.

But what struck me about this stylish man was that similar coats and quilted waistcoats are worn (much more self-consciously) by the trendy fashion brigade at the international fashion shows. Here is how they should be worn, with a check shirt and red silk tie; total self-confidence and style. Timeless and ageless fashion personified.

In Camera - Female style at London Fashion Week

Tuesday, 19 February 2013

I approached this gorgeous lady at LFW because I liked her style. She particularly asked me to take a close-up shot of her vintage (man's) shirt as she thought, quite correctly, that it would appeal to Grey Fox readers. She writes a website and blog at Shop Curious here.

In Camera - London Fashion Week February 2013 Part 1

Friday, 15 February 2013

I hadn't intended going to London Fashion Week to pursue my new street photography career; but it was a beautiful sunny day and I couldn't resist.

I was on the lookout for images of older men of style - grey foxes. Here's a mixture, not all fashion world types. More to come!

In Camera - a well-dressed gentleman in Chelsea

Friday, 8 February 2013

This is, I hope, the first of a series of streetstyle photographs of well-dressed, stylish, middle-aged and older men (not necessarily fashionable, whatever that means). This gentleman in Chelsea immediately caught the eye, with his double-breasted suit, buttonhole and tightly-furled cane-handled brolly. He had a copy of The Rake under his arm; unfortunately I didn't ask him to have this in shot. I love the mix of blues.

I hope that my courage and photography skills will increase over time, so be patient. Please let me know if  you enjoy it. With many thanks to my extremely courteous and patient subject in Chelsea.
