Geoff Stocker: Silk Silver Pinstripe Gown

Sunday, 8 November 2020

Geoff Stocker is a stalwart of British designed and manufactured silk products and I've mentioned his pocket squares, ties and silk gowns here before.

Recently I borrowed his new silver pinstripe silk gown to try it out and take some photos. This gloriously elegant silver/grey striped dressing gown can be used for everything from smoking jacket to luxury lounge coat. I styled it in my kitchen and enjoyed its relaxed, not to say louche, nature. The photos don't do justice to the rich feel and texture of the shimmering silk. One for sumptuous relaxation and working from home.

I asked Geoff to tell me about his inspiration for this piece of unalloyed and refined luxury:
'My first job was as a Bank Clerk and the standard uniform back then was a dark pinstripe suit. Which I must be honest, I hated and it set me against dark brown as a colour ever since.

However one of my fellow clerks came into the office wearing a spectacular light grey 3 piece pinstripe suit that looked fantastic. The memory of that suit then sat in the back of my mind for decades until earlier this year it occurred to me that a re-appraisal of the humble pinstripe was long overdue. Only this time it would be presented as a luxury silk dressing gown for wearing at home and certainly not for work.

Usually my designs are a complex mix of multiple colours and elaborate fine detail. The pinstripe is on the surface the most simple design that I’d ever worked on, or so I thought. In actual fact the amount of testing I had to do to get the right width of pinstripe line, space between each line and matching of the shades of silver grey in the background to the cuffs and collar was more than I’d ever done for any of the previous dressing gown designs. Less was most definitely more in that respect.

The final result is a shimmering silver addition to the gown collection that reflects light in a way that none of the other darker designs do'.
