Gloverall: British Manufacture and Sustainability

I first saw some of Gloverall's new AW19 collection earlier this year when I was particularly struck by a gorgeous overcoat that looked as though it was made out of boiled wool. Like most of Gloverall's products, it's British made and it continues the company's tradition of designing practical, classic and highly wearable men's and womenswear.

Gloverall coat, jumper and jeans from AW19

I thought about that coat from time to time and was delighted when Gloverall contacted me recently to offer to send me one to try. I also asked to borrow a couple of other items to get a more comprehensive view of the new collection.

The coat is a delight to wear, a good length in an era when most coats are cut far too short, leaving thighs exposed to rain and cold. The Manchester-made jeans are a sensible and comfortable weight and cut, while the chunky submariner jumper is the sort of classic that you'll reach for whenever the weather gets chilly.

Gloverall are often associated, rightly, with duffel coats, but they mix heritage with contemporary by looking for interesting collaborations and by tweaking the classics to bring them up to date in shape and materials. Marianne Tse-Laurence, Head of Design at Gloverall, told me more:
"For AW19 we have done a few collaborations such as E.tautz and Lou Dalton both strong British menswear brands with military inspired backgrounds.
I’m focussing more on sustainability as well, as I hope every brand is! Working with mills who are taking significant steps to increase their sustainability and close loop production... On top of that we have removed plastic packaging and keeping our carbon footprint down by manufacturing locally and not air-freighting goods.

Other new things include introducing our first denim jean, the Harold jean. Named after our founder Harold Morris. This is based on an old military block which has been adapted for a modern fit. The fabric is raw 13oz selvedge denim from Cardiani, leading the way in sustainable denim. The jeans are manufactured in Manchester. Available online only.

Introducing socks this winter made in a small village in Loughborough by a family run manufacturer that have been making socks since 1895!

[We are] slowly growing the collection offering, but choosing key timeless styles made in the UK".
See Gloverall's website for more information and to buy.
