I'm not one for colourful trousers. At least, I thought I wasn't; until I tried these cords from New & Lingwood (link below) and I'm now a fan. When an email arrived showing six bright pairs of trousers in a range of autumnal hues, my immediate thought was not to feature them. I then reminded myself that I'm meant to be open-minded, introducing myself and readers to products they may otherwise not consider.
So I asked for a loan of three pairs. They arrived in orange wode, lime wode and rust wode. My first thought was that wode is the blue dye, but of course, that's woad. Wode is old English for 'mad, crazy, possessed, frantic' but it also means 'a wood'. Both meanings could apply here, but I suspect it's a woody inspiration behind the autumnal leaf and fruit palette that inspired the name.

Anyway, I tried them on and loved them. The medium wale (the thickness of the ribs in the cloth) heavyweight corduroy is soft, comfortable and hangs well - the benefits of high quality corduroy. The fit is stylishly loose with a higher flat-fronted waist. They come unhemmed and I would be tempted to wear them with 2" turn-ups (N&L don't charge for such alterations). I'm totally converted and, in an ideal world, would own all six colours (the above plus air force blue, purple and chocolate) and wear them in rotation. Of the three I tried, the lime green was my favourite (the colours are best reproduced in the images below).
Once again, I've stuck my neck out and found myself extending the range of colours and styles that I'm willing to try. We should all do this if we are to find true style. I've said it before about New & Lingwood, they have become a favourite brand because of their classic yet often daring styles. I can be as bold or as traditional I want: a very British approach to menswear.
