Watches with many complications are wonderful creations. The new Lange 1 Time Zone watch, launched last week by Saxony watchmakers A. Lange & Söhne, is no exception and I recently accepted an offer to borrow one for a closer look.

The new and updated A. Lange & Söhne 1 Time Zone watch |
I haven't handled a Lange watch before and was struck by the quality of the feel and appearance of the watch, with its immaculately finished dial and gorgeously decorated movement. As ever with quality watches, you have to examine the details with a loupe to really appreciate the minute and breathtaking beauty of case, dial and movement. Hours of work go into the engineering of timepieces such as this. If you are lucky enough to own one, you wear an object that exudes the pride, craftsmanship and skills of those who design and make such pieces.
The watch shows the time in two time zones on two subdials (you can switch between these) and, as well as a date, there are indicators for day-night, daylight saving and power reserve. That's easy for me to describe, but the complexity of the watchmaking that makes that all happen in a watch 42mm across is beyond my understanding.
