Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2018: In Aid of Kidscape

Wednesday, 31 October 2018

I was delighted last week to be able to support the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2018 event in aid of Kidscape. The charity has tackled bullying and sexual abuse for thirty years and, supported by Specsavers, raises money to support bullied children and their parents and for its Parent Advice Line. In the last 10 years some £600,000 has been raised by Specsavers for the charity.

Dame Mary Perkins, co-founder of Specsavers with a Hairy Biker

Kidscape helps children who are bullied with support and practical steps like assertiveness training. Parents and carers are given advice to enable them to support a child who's suffering the terrible effects of bullying. It's a cause close to my heart, as a parent and a former teacher. Children can be very cruel to each other (as can adults of course) and bullying can undermine confidence and cause longterm mental illness. No child should have to experience it, but if they do the support that Kidscape offers provides a lifeline to suffering children and their parents.

With fellow blogger, Nikki Garnett of @midlifechic

Kidscape's Parent Advice Line is supported by Specsavers. It's a national competition, open to all glasses wearers, from which Specsavers makes a contribution to Kidscape for every entry. The event is a great party - with a superb meal culminating in the giving of the awards which celebrate spectacle wearing while also supporting a deserving charity. It was a privilege to be invited to the event and to support such a worthwhile cause.

I was at the event with other bloggers - The Specsavers #LoveGlasses Influencer Squad for 2018. I was wearing Specsavers glasses of course. As can be seen, they have clear frames and are from Lyle & Scott. I used to wear contact lenses most days, but now find that I enjoy wearing specs as I can change styles and look with my glasses - so they become part of an outfit.

The judges - who do you recognise?

My blogger counterpart among the squad (but still much younger than me) is Nikki Garnett of @midlifechic - one of the strong group of older bloggers enlivening social media nowadays (see above).

With many thanks to Specsavers for a great evening and for their support for Kidscape.
